server CIA World Factbook, se celková délka světových komunikací rovná
téměř 69 milionům kilometrů. Největší podíl z tohoto těžko
představitelného čísla patří Spojeným státům americkým, dále pak Evropské
unii, Indii, Číně, Brazílii a Japonsku.
Z cest často vnímáme jen nekonečné plochy
asfaltu, ale mosty překonávající údolí, říční toky a jezera, tunely ražené
skalními masivy nebo silnice stoupající vysoko k vrcholům mnohdy docela
přehlížíme. Zbudování leckterých z nich nás stálo ohromné úsilí a nezměrné

pohoří Karpat v délce devadesáti kilometrů až do výšky 2034 metrů nad

Visutý most Golden Gate byl dokončen v roce
1937 na západním pobřeží Spojených států amerických. Je známým symbolem
San Franciska, jehož centrum spojuje s jednou z jeho okrajových částí.
Celková délka dosahuje 2737 metrů a s rozpětím 1280 metrů držel most
v době svého vzniku světové prvenství.

Nejvyšší most světa Viadukt Millau navrhl
francouzský projektant Michel Virlogeux ve spolupráci s britským
architektem Normanem Fosterem. Klene se v délce 2460 metrů u
stejnojmenného městečka a od roku 2004 spojuje Paříž s jižní částí
Francie.

v roce 1993. Složitá konstrukce křižovatky umožňuje propojení všech
dopravních směrů a zároveň plní funkci důležitého uzlu veřejné dopravy.

Building of
roads and shortening of distances has been close to mankind ever since.
With a changing lifestyle of a fast-growing society, there are increasing
demands on the building of road networks and the development of transport
infrastructure.
In 2007, the imaginary boarder of 50 million newly produced personal cars
in a single year was broken for the first time, and at the present, an
estimated 600 million vehicles circle our planet. The building of road
networks is in accordance with this rising number of transport vehicles,
especially in developed parts of the world.
According to a survey presented by the internet server CIA World Factbook,
the length of world road networks equals nearly 69 million kilometres. The
biggest portion of this unimaginable number belongs to the United States
of America, then the European Union, India, China, Brazil and Japan.
We often perceive only tarmac surfaces from our trips, but bridges
crossing over valleys, river streams and lakes, tunnels casted into blocks
of rock, or roads ascending to high peaks, are usually overlooked. The
construction of most of these has cost us enormous effort and an immense
amount of money. But all are an example of human courage and desire to
daringly overcome challenges, which have been augmented by discovery and
experience.
Now you can get to know eight of the most interesting civil engineering
structures, which were so challenging, one would catch him/herself
by the hair.

drivers. As a strategic military route, it was developed at the beginning
of the seventies of the last century. It winds across the Carpathian
mountain range at a length of ninety kilometres all the way to an altitude
of 2034 metres. It’s closed in the winter time due to a thick layer of
snow.
